Search Federal BOP Releases

To find someone released from federal prison, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator and match the result with federal court records. The locator covers federal inmates from its stated modern record period and may show a release date. It does not cover an ordinary Grady County jail booking. A person listed as released or not in BOP custody may remain with another authority or under supervision. The status must therefore be read by jurisdiction, date, and receiving system.

Federal BOP Release Results

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 to the present. It is not a Grady County jail roster. A result marked “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” means the person is no longer held by BOP, but the person may be in another system or on supervision.

That caveat is central. A federal release result does not prove return to Grady County, freedom from all custody, or completion of supervised release. Check the federal court record and any identified receiving authority.

Search Federal BOP Releases

Open the official BOP Inmate Locator. Search by register number when possible, or use the name fields and required personal details.

  1. Choose number or name search.
  2. Enter the best federal identifier or full name.
  3. Compare age, race, sex, register number, and result status.
  4. Record the displayed release date and wording.
  5. Check the federal docket or another agency if the person may remain under authority.

For a local booking, use the Grady County release path instead. BOP does not document ordinary sheriff bond releases.

Federal BOP Record Contact

The locator is the official public starting point. Case-specific records may require BOP, the federal court, counsel, or the U.S. Marshals channel depending on sentence stage and custody.

Federal Bureau of Prisons

Locator: bop.gov/inmateloc
Coverage: Federal inmates from 1982 forward
Key statuses: Released; Not in BOP Custody
Local Grady records: Sheriff at 229-377-5200

No Grady-specific online U.S. Marshals release channel was found. If the sheriff says a person entered federal custody, use the federal docket and agency route rather than guessing from a delay in BOP designation.

Federal BOP Locator Scope

BOP manages sentenced federal prisoners and designated facilities. U.S. Marshals custody can precede BOP placement, including holds, writs, and transports through local jails. A person may therefore be in federal authority without appearing immediately as a designated BOP inmate.

Status or sourceMeaning
In BOP custodyCurrent federal BOP placement shown by locator
ReleasedNo longer in BOP custody, with displayed date
Not in BOP CustodyOutside BOP, possibly another authority or supervision
USMS or federal docketPre-designation, transport, hold, and case information
Grady sheriffLocal booking and transfer record

A federal sentence and a county charge can coexist. Match the jurisdiction and date before drawing a conclusion.

Read Federal Release Status

“Released” describes BOP custody, not every legal restraint. The person may be on federal supervised release, held by a state, county, or immigration authority, or involved in another case. “Not in BOP Custody” carries the same need for follow-up.

Supervised release
A federal court-ordered community term that may follow prison.
Detainer
A request that another authority receive or hold a person.
Designation
BOP assignment to a federal facility after sentencing and processing.
Writ
A court order that can move a person temporarily for proceedings.

Use the federal docket for sentence and supervision orders. Use the receiving agency for any later custody.

Grady to Federal Custody

If the Grady County Detention Facility reports release to federal authorities, ask for the date, destination, and receiving-agency field on the release sheet. That event is a transfer, not release into the community. BOP data may lag while Marshals transport or designation occurs.

No official source found a permanent federal facility in Grady County for this project. Do not infer one from a federal hold. Continue with the federal court case, BOP once designated, and case-specific counsel or Marshals channels.

Federal Release Date Checks

The locator's date is useful but should be paired with status wording. It can show when BOP custody ended, while the judgment and docket explain the sentence and supervised-release term. If identity is uncertain, use the federal register number.

Older federal records before 1982 are outside the locator's stated coverage. A missing result may also reflect spelling, identifier, pretrial Marshals custody, or a non-BOP system. Try the federal docket before concluding there is no federal case.

Separate Grady and Federal Records

Grady sheriff records document a county custody episode. BOP documents federal imprisonment. The court docket documents charges, judgment, and supervision. ICE may document immigration detention after another system releases the person.

Build the timeline by agency and date. Request records from their creators. This prevents a BOP release date from being misread as a Grady bond date or a local transfer from being described as federal discharge.

A federal timeline begins with the judgment and BOP register number, then adds designation, custody status, release date, and supervised-release order. If Grady held the person, add the sheriff booking and transfer fields without treating that stay as the federal sentence record. If ICE or a state agency received the person after BOP, add its separate result. A federal docket explains the sentence, BOP explains its custody, and the next agency explains continued detention. Together they clarify what “not in BOP custody” means.

When the locator date matters, save the register number and exact status text. Those details help BOP or the federal court distinguish the person and confirm the record without relying on name alone.
